Soapy Science
Students in Mrs. Milner's class completed their
first lab on the cell membrane. By studying the
phospholipid bilayer, they learned how
diffusion moves molecules across the barrier
and discovered how different embedded
proteins perform unique, vital functions for the cell.

Biology students (Prince Buggs, DJ Flagler, and Rye Kimble) stepped into the role of “Osmosis Coaches” as they helped their classmates better understand the movement of water across a cell membrane. Working together, students coached one another through challenging osmosis scenarios and applied their knowledge to determine what was happening inside and outside the cell.
As part of the activity, students calculated missing percentages, identified whether a solution was hypertonic, hypotonic, or isotonic, and determined the type of cell involved. They then used their understanding of concentration gradients to describe the net movement of water into or out of the cell.
Through peer teaching and collaboration, students discovered that sometimes the best way to master a concept is to teach it to someone else! Our Osmosis Coaches helped their classmates “go with the flow” while building confidence in their own understanding of this important biology concept.

The Culinary Club enjoyed making pudding cups. The students learned how to layer their dessert to create a beautiful individual dish that everyone can enjoy.

Seminole Legacy traveled to Chipola College to watch four of our SCMHS alumni (Quinton Chavers, Hope Humphries, Milan Richardson, and Caden Kearns) perform in the Pulitzer Prize winning play, Our Town“ by Thornton Wilder. Students read the play beforehand in class, as well as will complete a project on this amazing play.

Work-Based Learning Student/Employer Spotlight
Donalsonville Hospital became a WBL partner last school year, and the invaluable experiences they provide our Healthcare students have made a tremendous impact. Students employed through the program gain a wide variety of shadowing and hands-on experiences that provide meaningful, real-world exposure they can carry with them into the next phase of their education and careers.
Car’laysha Pickren completed the Allied Health and Medicine Pathway last year, while Rylee Scott and Brooke Robinson are completing the pathway this year. These courses prepare students to become multi-skilled healthcare providers by equipping them with practical knowledge and hands-on experience across a variety of allied health fields.
We are incredibly grateful to Donalsonville Hospital for opening their doors to our students, investing in their growth, and helping them discover what is possible in the healthcare field. Partnerships like this provide opportunities that reach far beyond the classroom and help prepare our students for successful futures. Thank you, Donalsonville Hospital, for believing in our students and for being such a valued partner in their journey!

Glowing Cells and Glowing Minds
Last week in Mrs. Milner’s class, students
experimented with purple LED lights and used
highlighters that contain neon to make membrane
structures; then, they discussed the functions of each
area in the membrane and its importance. This helped
the students understand more about cells, how
everything has its own personal function and how it all
works like a system! ~Landon King
